Case brief

Situation

Bois de Valbrune SA (a fictitious entity) operates a sawmill and a DIY store. At the sawmill, sawing logs simultaneously produces beams and planks, two joint products sold to carpenters and timber merchants, as well as sawdust, sold to a pellet manufacturer. At the store, thousands of rapidly changing items are sold in two departments. You are preparing the financial statements for the year ended 31 December 20X3.

Your assignment

Analyse the sawing process, determine the net realisable value of the sawdust and allocate the joint costs of 20X3 between beams and planks, record the entry recognising them in inventories and measure its impact. Then measure the store's inventories using the retail method and state the information to be obtained. One document is not useful and one piece of information is missing.

Work on this file as you would in practice: read the situation, open the documents, sort the useful information, then carry out the work requested. The solution is revealed once you submit.

Advanced level: no help, the work is grouped by kind.

Sawmill management accounting report

Sawmill management accounting report, 20X3: logs consumed 600,000; direct labour 150,000; variable production overheads 50,000; fixed production overheads 100,000, allocated on the actual production of 5,000 m³ of sawn timber, equal to normal capacity (average production of the last three years, taking into account planned maintenance shutdowns); joint costs up to the split-off point 900,000. Costs are not separately identifiable by product before that point. The sales director suggests allocating fixed overheads on the maximum capacity of the saws, 6,500 m³, in order to reduce the unit cost.
