Context
Groupe Vasquerel (fictitious entity) is closing its 20X5 consolidated statements. The closing memo combines a prior period error, two changes in policy of which one is partly impracticable, a change in estimate, a settled claim, a policy to be developed and an IFRS issued but not applied. You prepare the review file, submitted to the reviewer before sign-off.
Assignment
Classification matrix of the closing points
Purpose of the workpaper
For each change of the period (one instance per change), describe the facts and the date on which the information was available, review the definitions, the conditions for a change in accounting policy and the nature of an estimate, measure where useful what the classification puts at stake (gap between prospective treatment and retrospective restatement), then classify the change, give the rationale and route it to its treatment and disclosures.
Questions of the file covered by this workpaper
- Classify points (a) to (g) of the closing memo.
- Is the move to FIFO permitted? What about standard X?
- Measure what the CFO's proposal on point (e) puts at stake.
