Case brief

Situation

Énergies du Vallon SA (fictitious entity) builds a hydroelectric plant, a qualifying asset, from 1 January to 30 June 20X5 and places it in service on 1 July 20X5; year end 31 December 20X5. A public bank grants it on 1 January 20X5 a loan A of 1,000,000 EUR, interest-free, repayable in full in 3 years; it had granted it in 20X4 a forgivable loan B of 200,000 EUR, at the market rate, whose forgiveness depends on an employment target.

Your assignment

Measure loan A at initial recognition and compute its benefit; identify the missing information; justify the market rate and the boundary with IFRS 9, and assess the forgiveness of loan B; compute the eligible expenditure for capitalisation and reconcile the liability of loan A; state the disclosures; record the transactions (case data) and present their effect; conclude.

Work on this file as you would in practice: read the situation, open the documents, sort the useful information, then carry out the work requested. The solution is revealed once you submit.

Autonomous professional situation

As on a real engagement: no method, no checklist and no hints. You identify the issues yourself, organise the work and defend your conclusion.

  • Organise the work
