Case brief

Situation

Mavrel SA (fictitious entity) in 20X6 bought back and then partly resold its own shares, declared a dividend on its ordinary shares, recognised the dividend of its redeemable preference shares, and issued together ordinary shares and redeemable preference shares with common costs. You prepare the entries and their effect on the financial statements.

Your assignment

Record the buyback of own shares; compute the cost and the proceeds of the shares resold and then the difference, and record the resale; record the dividend on the ordinary shares and compute and record the dividend on the preference shares classified as a liability; allocate the common issue costs between the two instruments on the basis of the proceeds (case convention), compute the net amount in equity and record the costs charged to equity; place the tax effect of distributions; present the effects on the financial statements and conclude. There is no workpaper.

Work on this file as you would in practice: read the situation, open the documents, sort the useful information, then carry out the work requested. The solution is revealed once you submit.

Company profile and case conventions

Mavrel SA (fictitious entity) closes its accounts on 31 December 20X6. Case conventions: amounts in EUR; all the shares reacquired have the same unit cost; case convention (pedagogical assumption, not attributed to IAS 32): the common costs are allocated on the basis of the proceeds of the two instruments issued together; the tax effect is ignored; the entries are illustrative.
