Context
The Hestrel group (fictitious entity, DIY and garden retail) is closing its 20X8 consolidated financial statements. The year combines the acquisition of Brivaldi SAS, the disposal of Hestrel Atlantique, a purchase of non-controlling interests, new leases, a dollar loan, a US subsidiary, trapped cash and a supplier finance programme. The draft statement does not reconcile with cash. You prepare the file, submitted to the reviewer before sign-off. Teaching simulation: the review trail of the file (preparation, reviewer notes and final sign-off) is simulated for demonstration purposes; it is neither a real review nor a validation of the content.
Assignment
Cash flow classification matrix
Purpose of the workpaper
For each transaction of the period (one instance per transaction), describe the facts and the amount paid or received, check whether it is a cash flow, apply the definitions and examples of the three activities, identify the flows of a single payment that may be classified differently, apply the classification rules for interest, dividends and taxes (entity status given by the case) and the conditions for net presentation, then justify the classification and the disclosures.
Questions of the file covered by this workpaper
- Settle the classifications to be justified, including those of interest, dividends and taxes given the status of the group.
- Split the lease payments and check the repayments.
