Case brief

Situation

Tarvane Group SA (fictitious entity) consolidates two subsidiaries with minority third parties: Corvane SA, profitable, with cumulative preference shares held by third parties, and Dentra SARL, loss-making, which closes three months earlier and applies another inventory method. You prepare the 20X6 consolidation file.

Your assignment

Deal with Dentra’s date gap and harmonise its policies; compute the unrealised profit, the profit attributable to Corvane’s ordinary shares, the third parties’ share, the closing balance of their interests, the share of Dentra’s loss attributed to third parties and their deficit balance; record the four consolidation entries, present their cumulative effect and conclude. One document is not useful.

Work on this file as you would in practice: read the situation, open the documents, sort the useful information, then carry out the work requested. The solution is revealed once you submit.

Advanced level: no help, the work is grouped by kind.

Group profile and case conventions

Tarvane Group SA (fictitious entity) closes its consolidated accounts on 31 December 20X6 and consolidates Corvane SA and Dentra SARL. Case conventions: amounts in EUR; case convention (pedagogical assumption, not attributed to IFRS 10): the sale of inventory to Corvane is a sale from the parent to its subsidiary, the elimination of unrealised profit being borne by the owners of the parent with no effect on third parties; the preference shares are classified in equity; tax effects are set aside; the entries are illustrative.
