Case brief

Situation

Quermont SA (fictitious entity) funds a defined benefit pension plan through a separate fund. At 31 December 20X6, you prepare the cost of the year and the closing net liability from the actuary report and the fund manager statement.

Your assignment

Compute the opening net liability; determine the service cost of the year from the attributed benefit; compute the interest on the obligation, the interest income on the assets and the net interest; reconcile the obligation and the assets from opening to closing to obtain, as balancing items, the actuarial loss and the return on the assets excluding interest; determine the cost in profit or loss, the net remeasurement in other comprehensive income and the closing net liability; record the four entries, present the effect on the financial statements, explain the presentation and conclude. One document is not useful.

Work on this file as you would in practice: read the situation, open the documents, sort the useful information, then carry out the work requested. The solution is revealed once you submit.

Company profile and case conventions

Quermont SA (fictitious entity) closes its accounts on 31 December; its functional currency is the euro. Case conventions (pedagogical assumptions): amounts in EUR; linear attribution of the benefit; the benefits paid by the fund and the employer contribution arise on 31 December, so that the net interest of the year is computed at the start-of-year rate on the opening net liability; no plan change in 20X6; the tax effect is ignored.
