Normative references

  • IAS 38 §18Recognition requires the entity to demonstrate that the item meets the definition and the recognition criteria; this applies to costs incurred initially and to costs incurred subsequently to add to, replace part of, or service the asset.
  • IAS 38 §21Recognition if, and only if, it is probable that the expected future economic benefits attributable to the asset will flow to the entity and the cost of the asset can be measured reliably.
  • IAS 38 §22To assess whether the expected future economic benefits are probable, the entity uses reasonable and supportable assumptions that represent management's best estimate of the set of economic conditions that will exist over the asset's useful life; it uses judgement to assess the degree of certainty of the flow of benefits on the basis of the evidence available at initial recognition, giving greater weight to external evidence (paras. 22 and 23).
  • IAS 38 §25For a separately acquired intangible asset, the price paid normally reflects the entity's expectations about the probability that the future economic benefits will flow to it: the entity expects an inflow of benefits even if there is uncertainty about its timing or amount. The probability criterion in paragraph 21(a) is therefore always considered to be satisfied for a separate acquisition.
  • IAS 38 §26The cost of a separately acquired intangible asset can usually be measured reliably (criterion in paragraph 21(b)), particularly when the purchase consideration is in the form of cash or other monetary assets.
